We Have Reached Record Employment – Not Only in the History of Independent Slovenia but in History in General!

In November 2021, more than 913,400 people were in active employment, which is another record number. The number of persons in paid employment at the annual level increased the most in the manufacturing sector, and the number of self-employed people increased the most in the construction sector. The Slovenian economy is a great story of success. The mainstream media continue to report that we currently have record employment, the highest in the history of independent Slovenia. However, that is not the full truth – we have the highest employment rate in history in general.

At the end of November 2021, just over 913,400 people were employed (which is 2.7 percent more than at the same time a year ago). Once again, the number of persons in employment reached a new highest number (which has now been true for the fifth month in a row) since the beginning of monitoring the register data on the working population. The majority of persons were employed in manufacturing (22.8 percent) and in trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (12.7 percent).

The number of persons in employment increased by 1,600
The number of employed and self-employed persons increased by 0.2 percent (the former to about 816,400; the latter to just over 97,000). The number of both also increased on an annual basis, with the number of former by 2.7 percent and the number of latter by 2.2 percent. At the annual level, the number of persons in paid employment increased the most in the manufacturing sector and the number of self-employed in the construction sector. The number of persons in paid employment with legal entities increased by 2.9 percent on an annual basis, while the number of persons in paid employment in natural persons decreased by 0.4 percent, according to the Statistical Office.

The number of women in employment increased more
There were about 502,100 men in employment (or 0.1 percent more than in October 2021) and just over 411,300 women in employment (or 0.3 percent more than in the previous month). Among employed men, 78.3 percent of them had an employment contract for an indefinite period (most of them were in the age group between 40 and 44 – 15.5 percent), and among employed women, 81.6 percent of them had an employment contract for an indefinite period (most from the age group between 45 and 49 years – 16.4 percent). The largest group of employees with an employment contract for an indefinite period for both sexes work in manufacturing (31.9 percent of men and 17.1 percent of women).

In more than half of the activities, the number of persons in employment increased
In November 2021, on a monthly basis, the number of persons in employment decreased in eight and increased in twelve activities. The number increased the most in education (0.5 percent to about 77,200). If we look at the period of the last 20 years, we can see that in November 2021, this sector had the highest number of persons in employment so far, while in August 2020, it had the lower number (30.2 percent less). In November 2021, 20.7 percent of men and 79.3 percent of women were employed in this activity. Among employed men, 78.0 percent had a contract for an indefinite amount of time, and among employed women, 80.8 percent had this contract.
