“The Speaker of the National Assembly, Urška Klakočar Zupančič, who claims to have superior legal knowledge, which should not be questioned, and who was even a judge before, threatened the police,” said MP Žan Mahnič. He believes that this is more than enough reason for the Speaker to resign from her position, as her actions have, in his view, undermined the credibility of the institution she represents.
“The Court has protected freedom of speech, it has protected parliamentary democracy, and it has protected citizens from the arrogance of power of individuals, including Urška Klakočar Zupančič,” commented Žan Mahnič, MP from the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS), who called on Klakočar Zupančič to resign from her post as Speaker of the National Assembly. With her actions, she has shown that she will do anything and everything in her power to achieve her goals, thereby tarnishing the public image of the Parliament and destroying trust in the institution.
“She filed a criminal complaint against someone due to an offence, and because the police did not act as she expected, she sent a letter to the police threatening them and speaking badly about them, so that the police changed their minds, and then she had to come to court, where her former colleague literally told her that she has no clue about the law,” Mahnič stressed after Klakočar Zupančič lost her case against him in the court in Kranj. The Speaker of the National Assembly had influenced the police in this case to reverse its initial decision that the complaint did not meet the elements of an offence. The hearing did not even take place because the court found that his appeal was justified.
According to MP Mahnič, the documentation relating to Klakočar Zupančič’s complaint to the police shows that the police first assessed that his post did not constitute an offence, as his conduct did not meet all the elements of an offence under the Protection of Public Order Act. “It was only after the victim sent the police a letter with annexes that the police changed their decision and sent me an offence report,” the SDS MP stressed. As Mahnič explained at the press conference, something like what happened in this procedure should not have happened in a legal and democratic country. It is clear from the documentation that the police first decided that the act did not meet the elements of an offence in connection with the complaint by Klakočar Zupančič. Following a letter from the victim with annexes, the police reversed their decision and sent Mahnič an offence report.
Her conduct undermines the reputation of Parliament and confidence in the National Assembly
“Given that Urška Klakočar Zupančič is the Speaker of the National Assembly, who filed a criminal complaint against her colleague with the police; who threatened the police; who claims to have superior legal knowledge that should not be questioned, and who has even been a judge before, on the basis of all the facts and the ruling of the court in Kranj, I call on her to resign as Speaker of the National Assembly,” Mahnič stressed, adding that Klakočar Zupančič’s resignation would enable her to restore confidence in the National Assembly and in the office of the Speaker of the National Assembly itself.
He said that with her actions, Klakočar Zupančič was destroying the credibility and tarnishing the public image of the National Assembly. We have also asked the Speaker of the National Assembly for her response to what has happened. “Mahnič’s appeals are not worthy of comment,” stressed Klakočar Zupančič, adding that the aforementioned ruling was pertaining to a case between a Member of Parliament and the State.
