After Brežice, the citizens of Središče ob Dravi also strongly rejected the establishment of an asylum centre in their municipality on Wednesday. They made it clear that they do not want an asylum house or migrants in their midst. Security comes first, they added.
At a meeting of the Municipal Council, which was also attended by the citizens of Središče ob Dravi, those present highlighted similar things to what the citizens had said the day before in Brežice. Namely, they pointed out that the government had not informed the local community before the decision was taken, that they had merely been confronted with the fact a migrant centre for asylum seekers would be established in their municipality, and they added that they would not allow for the centre with migrants who are free to roam around to be established.
The local web portal sobotainfo.com has published a few more comments from the locals, and the following is especially significant:
“The asylum centre will not stand here, because the inhabitants of Središče ob Dravi are all on their feet – it can only be established over our dead bodies. We are against it; we will not have that here.”
Last week, the citizens of Središče ob Dravi, like the citizens of Brežice, were shocked by the news that an asylum centre was to be built on the site of the old border crossing with Croatia.

On Wednesday afternoon in Središče ob Dravi, we saw lots of citizens tractors that gathered in protest, with banners reading “No to the asylum centre – we do not want migrants here,” “We will not give you Središče ob Dravi,” “Let’s keep our community without an asylum centre,” and others like them. Locals also indicated they would protest if the government did not withdraw the decision to build an asylum centre in their municipality.
