Wikipedia’s financial report reveals that criticism of the online encyclopaedia’s political bias was justified. In a budget of 177 million dollars, as much as 50 million dollars were earmarked for the implementation of the “DEI” (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) agenda attributed to the political left.
The revelation sparked a wave of outrage, including from Elon Musk, the richest man on Earth and a future member of the Trump administration, who called the online encyclopaedia a “wokepedia” or “woke encyclopaedia”. “Stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority,” he wrote on the social network X.
Wikipedia has long been accused of unfair treatment of conservative politicians. A typical form of labelling opponents of the political left is to describe them as “far-right”. The Daily Fetched online media reports that Donald Trump was also labelled a “fascist” at one point, but the label was withdrawn after heavy criticism.
The report in question reveals that Wikipedia spent 51.7 million dollars on promoting the agency’s diversity, safety and inclusion, 86.1 million dollars on infrastructure and 39.2 million dollars on efficiency.
Musk has also announced that the DEI’s socialist political agenda must “die”. He believes that the DEI agenda is just another word for racism. Accordingly, he has announced drastic cuts in spending on DEI projects, while also recommending the reversal of DEI-related executive actions introduced by the outgoing Biden administration.
