On Wednesday, guests on the show Dogodki in odmevi (Events and Echoes) on the national Radio Slovenia commented on the Presidential election in the United States of America and Donald Trump’s victory. However, during the show, commentator Matej Šurc also said that Slovenia will now have to choose between saving money for weapons and leaving NATO.
Commentator Matej Šurc said on Radio Prvi (Radio First) that Kamala Harris had been sent in too late in the presidential race: “She didn’t make a major mistake, but she also didn’t make a breakthrough. But it is worth remembering that in America, there is still a strong concealed animosity towards women. With Trump, the sun will also rise, but from now on, it will move from west to east. He will do what is in America’s interests in relation to the world, he will stop the billions of aid for Ukraine, and he will let the Israelis trample on the Palestinians unless they themselves agree otherwise. And he intends to charge Europe more heavily for American services. So, Slovenia will also face a stark choice: whether to start seriously saving up for weapons or simply leave NATO.”
Matej Šurc has worked for the national media outlet, Radio-Television Slovenia (RTVS), since 1988, and he currently works as a commentator on Radio Slovenia. He is also known as the co-author of Svetlana Makarovič‘s vulgarly offensive booklet, The Reign of the Flies, which was mostly critical of the right-wing government of the time, and was often read out at the cycling protests during the COVID-19 epidemic.
