On Thursday, MEP Romana Tomc spoke in the European Parliament about the political purges in Slovenia and called on the European institutions to take appropriate action. In her address to the European Parliament, she explained that the Slovenian government’s actions are undermining the fundamental values of the European Union and called on the EU to take action.
“The European institutions have shown so far that they know how to condemn violations of the rule of law, which is why I hope that they will take appropriate action this time, too and that they will not stick their heads in the sand just because this is a left-wing government,” MEP Romana Tomc told the plenary in Brussels. As the MEP pointed out – calls for political purges have no place in a democratic world.
On Thursday, at the plenary session in Brussels, MEP Romana Tomc raised concerns about political purges in Slovenia’s independent institutions. “The actions of the Slovenian government undermine the fundamental values of the European Union. After the political takeover of the national media outlet Radio-Television Slovenia (RTVS), the same is happening in other Slovenian institutions that should be independent but are not,” she said. She also highlighted Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob‘s statement on “cleaning up the police of the Janšaists,” saying: “Clean up! These are horrific announcements of political purges that have no place in a democratic world,” she warned.
Will the European Union institutions react this time, too?
She called for respect for the rule of law, the independence of institutions, and expressed her expectation that the European Union will take appropriate measures to monitor developments in Slovenia. She pointed out that“the quasi-liberals, the left-wing socialists, two years ago wrote lies in a politicised Resolution on Slovenia, and today, the coalition partners are silent and are participating in the destruction of Slovenia”. She went on to say that the European institutions have shown so far that they know how to condemn violations of the rule of law and that she hopes that they will act accordingly this time, too and not “stick their heads in the sand just because this is a left-wing government”.
