“In my 23 years of politics, I have learned a lot, including that when one door closes, another one opens. Today, we are at the start of something big,” Anže Logar told the media gathered in the media centre after Sunday’s presidential election.
Anže Logar, who failed to win over the majority of the voters in the second round of presidential elections, congratulated the newly elected first female President of the Republic, Nataša Pirc Musar, in his statement in the media centre. In a very statesmanlike address, Logar expressed his wish that she would act in a unifying manner and would be the President of all people. “That is what Slovenia needs – now more than ever,” he said.
Logar devoted most of his statement to his opponent in the second round of the presidential election. In his opinion, Pirc Musar worked hard during the election campaign, which was not easy. “She was already written off during the campaign, but she persevered, like me, she did not give up, and today she won,” he said. They have different views, but Logar believes she heard his key message of cooperation and the expectation that Pirc Musar will be the President of all Slovenians. Namely, he wishes that she would act in a unifying manner. “It is in everyone’s interest to have a good President,” he pointed out.
Pirc Musar will have to be the President of all people
Pirc Musar will be a good President if she will listen to everyone. “Then she will have our support in bridging the differences, those differences that take the wind out of our sails. There are and will be differences between us, but that should not be an obstacle to us being united in finding common solutions. That is why I call on all those who voted for me to also congratulate Slovenia’s first female President,” he said.
He also thanked all the voters who supported him in the Sunday election. “More than 350,000 voters voted in favour of uniting Slovenia. It has been a long time since there was so much positivism in Slovenian politics. A large number of us have sent a loud and clear message that cooperation is the only right way forward for our future, which is a great asset for the future,” he assessed. He also thanked his family and his team. “We were all very enthusiastic. We believed and continue to believe in the idea of cooperation. We broke through with an idea, but we did not win,” he said.
Will Logar channel his political capital into a new political story?
Logar also pointed out something important. As he said, he has learned a lot in 23 years of politics, including that when one door closes, another one opens. “Today, we are at the beginning of something big,” he concluded his statement in the media centre, after which he did not respond to any questions from the journalists.
