“Is 2,000 euros a month not enough for the Freedom Movement party (Gibanje Svoboda)? Pay for it yourselves from the high financial rewards that you got in state-owned companies,” Janša responded to the new controversy of Urška Klakočar Zupančič, the Speaker of the National Assembly, who wants to take the illegal migrants to the seaside.
On Thursday, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Urška Klakočar Zupančič, visited the asylum centre in Logatec. Among other things, she called for free public transport for potential asylum seekers. She said that refugees from Ukraine, who are protected by temporary international protection, are entitled to free public transport, while asylum seekers are not. “Some people can take the bus, perhaps even go to the seaside, have some fun at the sea this summer, while the others cannot do that. I believe that this is discrimination that we need to pay attention to, and I kindly call on my colleagues to address it,” the media outlet Siol reports.
There are currently 257 people of different nationalities living in the Logatec asylum centre. Over 200 of them are Ukrainians. Most of them are members of a vulnerable group, as 110 of them are children, and 50 of them are still attending school. After her visit, Klakočar Zupančič added that these are victims of tragedies that are beyond our imagination. That is why she is happy that they are here, where it is peaceful and people are willing to take care of them. She is happy that they now have a decent life here – and will continue to have one for as long as it takes. She also took the opportunity to thank the asylum centre and the non-governmental organisations which make sure that the refugees have a wide range of activities available to them.
She also said she is happy that the refugees are being accepted in the local environment. However, she would like to see more children enrolled in educational institutions throughout Slovenia. She believes that this would help them to learn that there is more than war in the world and that there are also beautiful things. If they are left to themselves, they are more concerned with war and hatred. “We do not want them to grow up to be people filled with hate,” she said. She also called for the renovation of individual buildings to strengthen capacities, which is also what the asylum centre wants. However, she did note that the accommodation for refugees is adequate.
