Are Mass Protests About To Happen In Slovenia?

On the 19th of February, a new anti-government protest is planned in the Slovenian capital, where all generations will join forces. Students, farmers and others will join the pensioners.

While Serbia is being shaken by mass protests against the corrupt Vučić government, Slovenia is also boiling, as the government of Robert Golob imitates all its practices, while people’s lives are getting worse. Adding fuel to the fire are the announced privileged pensions for individual artists, which will significantly improve their material situation. What about ordinary pensioners who have worked full time for their pensions? Forgotten. With such a policy, young people, too, have no prospect of living with a pension and in a dignified manner in their old age in our country.

Pavel Rupar, President of the Voice of Pensioners party (Glas upokojencev), has called on all political parties to use their influence to encourage all Slovenian citizens to take part in the protest to be held on the 19th of February 2025 at 3 p.m. in Ljubljana’s Republic Square.

“Let the 19th of February be a day when the people’s voice is stronger than political ignorance! Let us show that we will not be silenced, that we will not allow the further erosion of social security and that we demand responsible governance,” urged Pavel Rupar on Facebook.

Rupar appealed to the presidents of most political parties – the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS), the New Slovenia party (Nova Slovenija – NSi), the Social Democrats (Socialni demokrati – SD), the Slovenian People’s Party (Slovenska ljudska stranka – SDS), the Pirates party (Pirati), Vesna – the Green Party (Vesna – zelena stranka, the Democrats party (Demokrati), the Focus party (Fokus) and the “disappointed voters” of the Freedom Movement party (Gibanje Svoboda) to attend the 17th protest rally and to invite their supporters to join them.

“The growing discontent among pensioners, workers, farmers, students and other citizens is the result of the unacceptable measures of the current government, which are placing additional burdens on the population, while privileges for narrow interest groups are growing. We are witnessing non-transparent spending of public money, increasing borrowing and pressure on the media and the civil society,” he said.

Rupar is aware of the influence of each party individually and believes that only by working together can they influence the situation in the country. “It is time to show that we care and will no longer stand by silently and watch our country deteriorate!” he wrote, adding that the aim of this rally is to send a clear message to the government of Robert Golob and the coalition – that enough is enough, and that they need to stop their destructive policies and consider early elections!

The President of the Voice of Pensioners party looks forward to hearing from all parties and to a possible proposal for a meeting to coordinate the next steps.
