A Great Success Of Our MEP: The European Parliament Is Preparing A Resolution Against The Golob Government

The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions will draft a resolution on “preserving the memory of the victims of the post-war communist period in Slovenia,” said Bogdan Rzonca, the Committee’s chairman. The decision was taken by the representatives of the political groups in the Committee after Monday’s hearing of the petition on the subject in question.

The initiator of the petition, Slovenian Member of the European Parliament, Romana Tomc (European People’s Party – EPP/Slovenian Democratic Party – SDS), said it was “a great success and a recognition of my efforts to preserve the memory of the victims of communism in Slovenia.”

After the draft resolution is prepared, it will first be discussed and decided on by a committee and, if approved by the Committee, by the European Parliament in a plenary session, the Slovenian Press Agnecy (STA) reported. The decision was taken by the coordinators of the political groups in the Committee, after the Committee once again considered the petition on preserving the memory of the victims of post-war communist violence in Slovenia on Monday and kept it open for further consideration.

At Monday’s meeting of the Committee on Petitions, MEP Tomc called for a resolution calling on the Slovenian government to condemn communist crimes and to guarantee the right to a grave and a memorial for all victims.

The petition, first signed by historian Dr Mitja Ferenc, was submitted to the European Parliament last year, after the government of Prime Minister Robert Golob abolished the 17th of May as the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Violence, when it took office in 2022. The day was declared a day of remembrance by the previous government, led by Janez Janša, just before the end of its mandate.
