Member of Parliament from the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS), Žan Mahnič, attended the World Hunting Organisation convention in Tennessee, where he met the son of the US President, Donald Trump Jr.
“Donald Trump Jr., son of the US President Donald Trump, came to greet us at the evening event of the World Hunting Convention in Nashville. It was a chance for a brief chat about politics and hunting, as he is an avid hunter himself. What excited me most of all is that he knows where Slovenia is,” MP Žan Mahnič captioned the photo of the two of them.
MP Mahnič, like Andrej Poglajen, another Member of the National Assembly, and Branko Grims, a Member of the European Parliament, attended the recent Trump inauguration event in Washington. The list of invitees was a source of controversy, especially on the Slovenian political left, whose representatives were not invited to the inauguration.
According to some media reports, the invitation was particularly sought by Prime Minister Robert Golob, who intercepted Trump in the corridor of the Elysée Palace, together with his partner Tina Gaber. In a brief conversation, he apparently failed to correct the bad impression he made with the US President before the presidential elections. A few days ago, Slovenian entrepreneur Ivo Boscarol revealed: “This summer, when Viktor (Melania Knavs’ father) was in Slovenia on holiday, I already believed that Trump would win. I connected them (Golob and Knavs) because I thought it was the right time to invite the Trumps to Slovenia before the election to show them that they were wanted and welcome in Melania’s home country and that if they won, Slovenia could look forward to good relations with the presidential family.”
Golob then went to visit the then-outgoing President Joe Biden and publicly endorsed Kamala Harris. He did not visit the Trump camp when he was in the USA, apparently because he had other things to do.
Interestingly, even the President of the country, Nataša Pirc Musar, did not receive an invitation, despite having represented Trump’s wife, Melania Knavs, in legal proceedings in the past.
