On Saturday, an assassination attempt was made against Donald Trump at one of his campaign rallies. We cannot help but wonder whether, with the many inciting calls and death threats, it is possible that something similar could happen in Slovenia.
Tulsi Gabbard, a former presidential candidate in the 2020 US presidential elections, believes that the attempted assassination of presidential candidate Donald Trump is a logical consequence of his repeated comparisons with Adolf Hitler.
Janša is also often compared to Hitler
It is obvious that some people really felt that Trump’s assassination was their duty, even their mission. Perhaps it is time to finally reflect on matters before something similar happens in Slovenia. Let us just think about how many times we have seen graffiti and calls in public calling directly or indirectly for the death of Janez Janša or comparing him to Hitler.
In the event of an assassination, the judiciary will be partly to blame
These individuals who keep making threats are not sanctioned here. The left-wing extremist Ludvik Tomšič, who directly called for Janša’s death, was even acquitted. Responsibility for any assassination will therefore also rest with the judicial branch of government.
It should also be noted that Janša’s entire immediate family has been threatened in the past, and Janša even posted several threatening notes that were sent to him on his X profile at the time, writing: “Threats will not weaken us. We will defend our family, our home and our country. Let no one doubt this. Remember 1991. And we will hold accountable those who sow hatred, who call for death and for a state in which psychopaths then imagine they can (once again) kill with impunity.”
In addition to Janša, other right-wing politicians, such as former Minister of Culture, Vasko Simoniti, have also been threatened on several occasions in the past.
In light of all of the above, and especially the fact that a man who threatened Janša was acquitted, we sent a press question to the District Court in Ljubljana and judge Jerca Oblak, who acquitted the said perpetrator, writing: “An assassination attempt on the life of Donald Trump happened yesterday, which was also the consequence of public incitement and comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler. We are wondering whether calls for death and comparison to Hitler that we have seen happen in our country could lead to something similar happening here. Namely, last autumn, your judge, Jerca Oblak, acquitted an instigator, Ludvik Tomšič, who openly called for the death of Janez Janša. Are the judge and the court aware of what such a legitimisation of calls for someone’s death could lead to? Do you believe that the judge and the court will be partially to blame for a possible situation that could arise from the said legitimisation?”
We will publish their response when we receive it.
