The leader of the opposition, Janez Janša, expressed his opposition to the Renew group’s ultimatum, saying that on Wednesday, the latter had held talks with Ursula von der Leyen and demanded that she renounce cooperation with the “far right”, including the ECR group. In response to the demand, Janša wrote that Renew is much more far-left than the ECR is far-right.
In his response to the EU liberals’ note, the leader of the opposition, Janez Janša, also noted that we have two big losers in the elections to the European Parliament – Renew and the Greens. Following the losers’ agenda, in his opinion, goes against the common sense. It is also important to note that under the leadership of the current President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, a coalition of the European People’s Party (EPP) with the liberals (Renew) and socialists (S&D) is quietly emerging, despite the defeat of the left-wing political currents in the European Parliament.
When the losers set the terms or the left’s ideological Apartheid
At the same time, there is a strong tendency on the left to exclude the political right, including the ECR group (Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni), and the European socialists are also opposed to cooperation with the “far right”, according to the MMC web portal. The re-election of von der Leyen as President of the European Commission remains under question. Individual candidates and even entire parties within the EPP-Renew-S&D bloc have already refused to support her, such as the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS).
Nemec and Prebilič do not support von der Leyen either
Von der Leyen also does not enjoy the support of all socialists. For example, Slovenian MEP Matjaž Nemec does not support her, as he has previously accused her of “illegal controls at the Schengen borders and following the EU’s double standards towards the war in Gaza.” It should also be noted that the newly-elected MEP Vladimir Prebilič (Vesna party, the European Greens) is also opposed to her re-election. In order to be re-elected, von der Leyen needs the support of 361 out of 720 Members of the European Parliament.
