The Golob Government Has Taken More Than 2,000 Euros From The Average Family On An Annual Basis

The Family Initiative (Družinska pobuda) has calculated that the average Slovenian family with two average salaries and two children in kindergarten will be deprived of 2,036 euros per year as a result of the harmful measures taken by the government of Robert Golob.

The parents’ salaries are lower due to higher income tax, families receive less child allowance, kindergartens are becoming more expensive, and it has even been announced that the measure of kindergarten being free for the second child will be abolished.

During the reign of the current coalition and government, an unprecedented number of measures have been adopted which increase the burden on all taxpayers, and the burden on families even more, so the resources available to them are already being noticeably reduced, and new and new burdens are being announced, the Family Initiative states.

That is why the parents who are part of the Family Initiative, the Association for a Family Friendly Society, have sent a call to the government and the National Assembly to immediately drop all the already announced additional burdens on parents and families, which, if adopted, could push many families into financial difficulties. Their calls, of course, fell on deaf ears.

Make the most of child tax credits

Make the most of the child tax credits you are eligible for. If you want this to already be taken into account in the informative calculation of the income tax, you need to find out the best way to do this before the 5th of February and, if necessary, submit an application to the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for this purpose.

This year, the Family Initiative has again prepared an Excel form, specifically tailored to calculate the best way to claim child tax credits. You can find the form (available in Slovenian) here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dd3Kw9D9ty1SDdRCX3TkO5SLEuCrhr_c/edit?pli=1#gid=764104833.

Check how much more tax you pay because of the changes introduced by the Golob government

This year’s form also includes a comparison of the income tax we have to pay under the left-wing Golob government with the income tax we would have had to pay if the law passed by the previous centre-right government had still been in force. That way, everyone will be able to calculate exactly how much more tax they have to pay on their own income as a result of the changes introduced by the Golob government. The figures are not insignificant, amounting to more than 220 euros a year on an average salary and considerably more on higher incomes.

The government has already published the figures for the 2024 personal income tax, which show that it will tighten its tax screw even more this year, as it has not adjusted either the personal income tax scale or the tax allowances even slightly for inflation.

Under the law adopted by the previous right-wing government, the general allowance would have risen to 6,500 euros this year (meanwhile, the Freedom Movement coalition is keeping it at 5,000 euros), and the income tax scale and allowances would be aligned with the full rate of inflation in 2023 (6.9 percent).

To see how the difference between taxation under Golob and under the previous centre-right government will increase this year, they have also created an income tax calculation form for 2024. Enter your income in 2023 and see how much more tax you pay under the current government. On an average salary for 2023, the difference this year will already be around 550 euros.
