[Public Opinion Poll] The SDS Party Is Way Ahead Of The Freedom Movement Party

The Freedom Movement party (Gibanje Svoboda), which managed to win the latest elections to the National Assembly by a convincing margin, continues to lose support, while on the other hand, support for the largest opposition party – Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS), led by former Prime Minister Janez Janša, is growing, according to a recent public opinion poll conducted by the Parsifal Agency for Nova24TV. “The results show not only that the Freedom Movement has run aground on the ruins of its own unfulfilled promises, but also that the deep state has given up on it, as it is clear that the bizarre, unpredictable behaviour of the Prime Minister is creating a danger of undermining all further projects of the new faces,” political analyst Mitja Iršič commented on the poll’s results.

The Parsifal Agency conducted a public opinion poll for Nova24TV on support for political parties between the 13th and 16th of November. 58.1 percent of respondents would definitely vote in the next parliamentary elections, while 13.2 percent of respondents would definitely not take part in the elections, according to the opinion poll, which was conducted between the 13th and 16th of November.

The SDS party convincingly in the lead

If elections to the National Assembly were held this Sunday, the party with the highest share of the vote would be the SDS party (28.5 percent), followed by the Freedom Movement party (17.1 percent) and the coalition Social Democrats party – SD (8.7 percent) in third place. The fourth place would go to the New Slovenia party (Nova Slovenija – NSi) with 8.4 votes, and the last place would go to the coalition Left party (Levica) with 4.8 percent of the vote, which barely made it into the National Assembly in the last national elections.

11.4 percent of respondents do not know who they would vote for in the national elections, 9.1 percent would vote for another party, 7 percent would not vote if the elections were held this Sunday, and 5.2 percent would not vote for any party.

The fall of the left is a historic opportunity for the right

We asked political analyst Mitja Iršič to comment on the poll. “After the adventure with yet another generic new-face party, the Slovenian electorate seems to be returning to the usual state of paralysis that we have witnessed since 2018, where the right has consolidated in the SDS party, and the centre-left is lost, looking for the next new face – more than 30 percent of people are clearly waiting to see the next “Golob” on 24ur, which will be more difficult from one mandate to the next, as the story has repeated itself for the fifth time in a row now, each time with more and more terrible results”, he pointed out, adding that it is clear that the SDS party is the only serious party in Slovenia with a well-developed local network and a stable electoral base.

“The results show not only that the Freedom Movement has run aground on the ruins of its own unfulfilled promises, but also that the deep state has given up on it, as it is clear that the bizarre, unpredictable behaviour of the Prime Minister is creating a danger of undermining all further projects of the new faces,” he said. Regarding the results of the New Slovenia party, he said that the party has once again shown that it does not offer an alternative to the SDS party on the right but, at best, a supplement. “The drift to the left has not helped them.” Given that the SD party and especially the Left party are still above the parliamentary threshold, Iršič said it suggests that they have insulated themselves well enough from the worst government in Slovenia’s history, in which they themselves are actively participating. “The question is how long they can succeed in this double game,” he stressed.

Iršič believes that it is clear that the current stalemate will not last until the next regular elections. “Big changes are afoot on both the left and the right. But it looks like the right will have a historic opportunity to form a fully right-wing coalition for the first time in history,” he added.
