Not only do we hear news about a new act of violence or crime committed by illegal migrants in Slovenia almost every day, but the increasing number of statements on social networks by people who fear for their safety and the safety of their children is also a testimony to how dangerous Slovenia has become because of the inadequate migration policy of the Golob government. One young mother shared her experience on Facebook – she had to hide in a bakery in Maribor out of fear.
Despite the constant efforts of the Golob government and the mainstream media to convince the public that the situation with migrants and illegal border crossings is not “out of control”, the reality is, unfortunately, quite different. More and more illegal migrants are entering Slovenia, and people feel less and less safe in several cities, even during the day.
The fact that people feel less and less safe is also evidenced by the increasing number of statements and testimonies on social media profiles. And if it was only Ljubljana that was initially considered to be less safe than before because of the rise in rapes, this is no longer the case. In fact, people also feel less safe in Maribor now than they used to. On Facebook, one young mother in the group called ‘Young Mothers – Maribor’ shared her experience to warn other mothers to take care of their safety. “Mothers, hello. I just want to warn you. On Tuesday evening, I went for a walk with my three children, it was about half past 7 p.m. I was followed by two migrants, a man and a woman, and of course, they looked very suspicious to me, so I observed them. They had something planned; I don’t know what… They could have been trying to rob me, they could have been trying to take the children away,” wrote one of the mums in the Facebook group, who then took refuge in the first bakery she noticed on her way, out of fear. “There is nothing worse than when you fear for the safety of your children. Take care of yourselves and your children, because it is not safe here anymore either.”
This, however, is not the only scary story of a parent from Maribor. On Thursday, the story of a Maribor resident was shared on social media, where he described his encounter with strangers on Lent in Maribor. Not only Ljubljana, but apparently Maribor is also becoming more and more dangerous due to the increasing number of foreigners. A Maribor resident, who was not only afraid for himself, but also for his daughter, described his story on social media. Judging by what was written, the inappropriate event took place on the footbridge on Maribor’s Lent.
This is not an isolated case
In a Facebook post, the Maribor resident wrote that he went for a walk with his daughter, but as they were walking over the footbridge, they were suddenly surrounded by four strangers who refused to move. He grabbed his daughter, whereupon one of the foreigners “grabbed him by the scruff of the neck”, he wrote. “One of them was trying to take my bag, so I tore it away and ran after my daughter – she was beside herself. I quickly called the police. They said that they would come to see, that I should wait and show them which side of the footbridge we came from. Which footbridge, was the first question? There is only one footbridge in Maribor, what does it matter which side you came from if you are attacked? I think it’s time we get something to protect ourselves. It is not safe anymore. We have come far.” His recount made rounds on social media X and Luka Simonič from the Slovenian Democratic Youth (Slovenska demokratska mladina – SDM), the youth wing of the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS), also commented on it, and wrote: “Maribor. Who will take care of the safety of the citizens!? Apparently, we will have to take matters into our own hands!! Is this really the Maribor I want?!? #WeCare”
“First Ljubljana, then Maribor, and there will be even more places like this in the future. Illegal migrants will be a growing security problem. The rulers, however, are turning a blind eye to this,” commented Andrej Kosi, SDS MP.
If the description of the event is true, we naturally wonder whether Maribor is still a safe place for day and night walks. We have also sent a question about this event to the Maribor Police. We are still waiting for answers.
It is not surprising that people no longer feel safe because of illegal migration, as was recently confirmed by a poll published by the Delo newspaper. All the other events around the world are increasing the risk of terrorism and other criminal acts, and the culture of the newcomers, who mostly do not come from democratic countries, is also quite different. In a Mediana poll conducted for the newspaper Delo, almost 60 percent of respondents said that the re-introduced control of the border will not affect migrant flows, and almost half of those polled feel less safe because of increased migration. The interior ministers of Slovenia, Italy and Croatia recently met in Trieste, to discuss the issue of surveillance and how to reduce its impact on citizens crossing the border on a daily basis.
