In the main hall of the National Assembly, MP Dejan Zavec and Speaker of the National Assembly Urška Klakočar Zupančič competed in a fake boxing match for the purpose of making a short film for children with cancer, despite the Slovenian Democratic Party parliamentary group’s protest that this is a very sensitive topic. Instead of focusing their energy on saving the healthcare sector in Slovenia, members of the ruling coalition are devoting their time to tasteless entertainment.
Nova24TV has obtained footage from the filming of a symbolic boxing match between the MP and former professional boxer Dejan Zavec and Speaker of the National Assembly Urška Klakočar Zupančič, which is intended to raise awareness of the fight against childhood cancer. The picture above is actually a scene from the film, which we unofficially obtained from the parliament.
The day before the filming, we already reported that this might not be the most appropriate move to show support for such a sensitive subject – namely, for children with cancer and their parents. The Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenska demokratska stranka – SDS) even sent a public letter, warning that Klakočar Zupančič was trying to portray the children and parents’ distress through a boxing match, which they deemed inappropriate.
They should instead focus on improving Slovenian healthcare
With this, the SDS party stressed that MPs could do so much more, both symbolically and otherwise, by making lasting changes to the related legislation, which would make life easier for parents with sick children. They could also work on the rights related to absence from work for the parents who need to be in the hospital with their children and the legislation that deals with this, rather than staging a boxing match in the National Assembly.
The SDS party also wrote that the time that will be allocated to making a feature film could instead be better spent on ensuring better conditions in the healthcare sector, in order to ensure that sick children can receive the best possible medical care. SDS MPs even pledged to support all legislative proposals that will make life easier for sick children and their parents.
In addition, on Tuesday, the news broke that the members of the Board of the Ljubljana Institute of Oncology unanimously selected the current Acting Director General, Andraž Jakelj, as the new Director General of the Institute.
