The start of the new school year is just two weeks away. Before the April elections, the Social Democrats party (SD) promised us free school meals and free kindergarten, a rise in minimum wage and pensions, 10,000 public rental flats and a mere 30-day wait period to get to a medical specialist.
These were their four fundamental promises, commitments that they said they would implement as soon as the government had changed.
Tanja Fajon, President of the party, and the SD party itself called: “These elections will be plebiscitary; they will be an indicator of where we want to take Slovenia. Come to the polls, vote for the SD party.” And they added the word “Different!” to their messages. Is anything really different yet? It does not seem like it.
Ten thousand public rental flats really cannot be created overnight, but there is no sign of anything moving in that direction. And what about the rest of the promise? The minimum wage and pensions have not risen, and there is no sign that they will. But what about free school meals and kindergarten? They still have 14 days to deliver on that commitment. Meanwhile, the promise of a 30-day wait period to get to a medical specialist has already fallen by the wayside.
