Migrant brutally beats passer-by in Italy, conservatives call for tighter border controls

After a video of a migrant mercilessly beating a passer-by in a Milan piazza went viral on social media, Remix News reports that Italian conservative politicians have called for tighter controls at Italy’s borders. The attacker is believed to be a homeless man from Tunisia, according to Italian media reports.

In the video, the migrant first kicks his victim, then comes at the man lying down with a flask and starts kicking him again mercilessly. While the reason for the attack is unknown, the attack itself has been highlighted by leaders of some conservative parties who are preparing for early elections after the recent resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The elections will take place on 25 September.

Northern League leader Matteo Salvini commented on the incident: “Scenes of an ordinary urban war between foreigners, violence and blood. Zero tolerance of criminals and security return on 25 September.

Giorgia Meloni, leader of the conservative Brothers of Italy party, wonders: “How many more attacks and violence will it take to admit that there is a major security problem in Italy?”, adding: “Let’s not waste time!”.

Unlike Salvini’s League, Meloni and her party did not enter coalition talks with the current government, but remained in opposition. This may turn out to have been the right move, given that the election result is expected to give her 24% of the vote to Salvini’s 14%, according to the current polls.
