The Hungarian prime minister, who is currently staying in Rome, posted a photo on Instagram which shows him together with Giorgia Meloni, sitting on a flight of stairs. The note above the photo, ‘Due fratelli’ (two siblings) may refer to Meloni’s party, Fratelli d’Italia. Bertalan Havasi, the PM’s press chief, confirmed that Mr Orban had talks with the leader of the Fratelli d’Italia party in Rome.
In the meeting they discussed the situation of the European right and the renewed threat of migration. The two party leaders set a common goal of making the right the largest political force in Europe again. They also shared the view that taking in masses of migrants is no solution, and that help should be taken there, not troubles here.
They pointed out that the European countries should resist the growing migratory pressure from multiple directions, both on land and at sea.
The meeting was also attended by Katalin Novak, vice-president of the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz, who is also responsible for international affairs.
Mr Orban and Ms Meloni had also met in Brussels at the end of June, when they agreed that right-wing parties should put an emphasis on representing the interests of millions of European citizens who believe in the traditional family model, a strong Europe based on strong nations, and our common cultural and religious roots.
