“With today’s debate, the Slovenian opposition is once again shamelessly using all possible means to overthrow the Slovenian government. A recent survey by the Slovenian Faculty of Media showed that 80 percent of the media in Slovenia are left-wing and anti-government. And yet, the government does not limit anyone. On the contrary, during the crisis, the media and journalists received substantial state aid,” MEP Romana Tomc said on Wednesday’s debate on the media in Poland, Hungary and Slovenia in the European Parliament, adding that the accusations, based on fabricated newspaper articles and false testimonies, are harmful and disparaging for Slovenia.
On Wednesday, Members of the European Parliament discussed the freedom of the media in Poland, Hungary and Slovenia. Slovenia was also discussed, despite the invitation for an investigative mission that was recently sent to the European institutions by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša. The initial debate on Poland and Hungary was later expanded to also include Slovenia, at the initiative of the Slovenian MEPs of the S&D and Renew, and with the support of their political groups.

“Last week, the latest survey by the Freedom House, which found that the Freedom Index for our country has improved since last year, was practically not mentioned in Slovenia. This is the answer for those concerned about the decline of democracy. As a young country, unfortunately, we are still facing the consequences of the past. Monopolies deplete the state and hinder our development. They are frantically fighting for their survival. Even through the media they control. The accusations based on fabricated newspaper articles and false testimonies are harmful and disparaging for Slovenia,” said Romana Tomc, who, at the end of the meeting, repeated the invitation of the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša, for the investigative mission to Slovenia.
